On March 1, Giga Day hosted over 120 attendees from the public and private sectors who celebrated the operational launch of the Giga Technology Centre in Barcelona, the R&D arm of the UNICEF-International Telecommunication Union initiative to connect every school in the world to the Internet by 2030.

The event featured the participation of representatives from the Government of Spain, Regional Government of Catalonia and the City of Barcelona, whose support made the Giga Technology Centre in Barcelona possible. The Giga team there will climb to over 20 this year, establishing its position as a hub of expertise in developing cutting-edge open-source technology solutions for school connectivity.

It also included a panel discussion and demonstrations by a dozen local tech entities of innovative digital solutions to both educational and other social challenges.

Juan Villar, Deputy Director-General for Multilateral Organizations in Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, spoke at the event and echoed the views of Giga’s other government supporters who took part in Giga Day.
